So what is Lootcrate? Well, if you've not heard of it before, you are about to learn about possibly the coolest thing you've learnt today. Lootcrate is a monthly subscription service that mails a box of 7 to 10 random, nerdy items to you each and every month! The contents of the box are kept secret, so you'll always be surprised and you won't know what neat geeky items you're going to get until you open it! It's a lot of fun and the items usually end up costing more than the subscription itself.

Monthly subscription boxes in general, now have a huge following and range in items from games to gadgets, cute to creative, pooches to practical - you name it and there's a fairly good chance that there's a Box for that (tm) ;D

Lootcrate was founded back in 2012, with its very first debut box being shipped out in December of that year. It has since gained a massive following and is shipped to 13 different countries including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Germany, Denmark, Finland, France, Norway, Netherlands, and Sweden... you get the idea! All over the world!

Every standard Lootcrate box will come with a theme related pin, a magazine which lists and explains the contents of the box as well as some other goodies such as interviews, a T-Shirt and at least one item that is exclusive to Lootcrate - which means it cannot be purchased anywhere else, and is definitely a huge selling point!

Lootcrate was also one of the first monthly subscription box services that offered unique nerdy items. Since getting started, many others competitors have surfaced such as Nerd Block, 1up Box, Power-up Box, Geekfuel and so forth. These boxes tend to run in the $14-30 dollar a month range. There are other more expensive boxes, depending on what kind of items they offer.

Lootcrate specifically will cost you $19.95 a month with shipping and handling if you decide to subscribe on a month-to-month basis. For a better deal they also offer the option of signing up for 3, 6 or 12 month subscription - each offering a slightly better price point.

Lootcrate keeps the items inside a box each month to a single theme. The themes are always unique and some recent examples include Fantasy, SciFi, Battle and Fear. The theme for May 2015 was "Unite" and included a pair of Marvel print shoelaces, a Marvel shapes ice cube tray, four Team Fortress 2 pins, an Avengers: Age of Ultron decal, a Rick & Morty 300 piece puzzle, a MAD magazine, a Bravest Warriors comic book, and a Power Rangers T-Shirt.

Lootcrate will announce the theme of the next months box shortly after shipping the current theme. This gives you plenty of advanced notice to consider whether or not you want to purchase next months crate. This is an advantage to monthly subscribers because not everyone likes the same things and therefore may want to opt out of a box now and then. There are likely some who may not have appreciated Aprils Theme of Fantasy for example - but who love Junes Cyber theme, and vice-versa. If you pay attention, you could choose to skip the crate for a month with a less appealing theme. Being able to do that, may justify the slightly higher price point of going month-to-month.

An important thing to keep in mind is that if you go with one of the larger plans offered by Lootcrate (and all other subscription box services as far as I'm aware) is that your credit card or other means of payment will be billed automatically on a recurring basis. If you do not want your card charged you will need to hold, stop, cancel or skip the service before your renewal date hits.

Aside from the standard monthly "Crates", Lootcrate will occasionally offer what they call a "Mystery Crate". These "Mystery Crates" are a bit smaller and come with various items left over from previous crates. This is a fun idea for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it has a similar feel to opening Blind Boxes, in that you don't know what will be inside - and cannot know what is inside until it's opened. This differs slightly from their regular monthly box which can have its contents easily spoiled simply by watching a YouTube video of someone else's crate. The "Mystery Crate" however, is made up of different items for everyone - so no matter how many Mystery Crate unboxing videos you watch, you likely wont see the exact same items in your own box!

Next up is the fact that you might get an item from a past Lootcrate that you wanted, but maybe missed out on (Mystery Crates do also include Lootcrate Exclusive items). Now of course there's no guarantee that the item you are after will be in your Mystery Crate, and it's probably a bit unlikely, but the chance offers you the same excitement you might get out of finding a "chase" item in a blind box (chase items are usually "fogged" out on blinds).

It was for these reasons that I chose to purchase a Mystery Crate recently, and enjoyed the completely random aspect of what I ended up with. You can see those items listed above or in my review video on YouTube. The "Mystery Crate" ended up costing me $20 including shipping and handling.

The last aspect of Lootcrate that I really enjoy is of course the Looter community! Lootcrate really does an amazing job of going out of its way to stay in touch with its subscribers through social media and overall seems like a nice place to work full of happy people. I've been very impressed by their liberal re-tweeting of subscribers and followers, not to mention the fantastic customer support this company offers - and I'm not just saying that, as I had some less-than-awesome experiences with Collector Corps in comparison.

Besides the company itself, "Looters" (the subscribers) have a wonderful repoire with one with another. I've heard many stories of strangers bumping into each other who were wearing the same Lootcrate T-shirt, pin or accessory who basically became instant friends without the awkward getting-to-know-you small talk you might have when meeting a stranger. The Looter community, amazing interaction and support from Lootcrate itself have been the most impressive points about this company in my opinion and I've enjoyed being part of it!
