What are Mystery Minis? Funko Mystery Minis are small collectable vinyl figurines that resemble animated or big screen fictional figures. In this case, these figures take after the popular cartoon show My Little Pony Friendship is Magic, aired on Disney, found also on Netflix.
This line of Mystery Minis figurines is series 2 of a (so far!) three part My Little Pony Mystery Minis series line. Series 3 just came out September 2015. Series 1 can still be found, although they can be a little tricky to find in stores.
Funko has partnerships with different retail stores who stock special "exclusive" variants of the Mystery Minis figurines. In our review videos we focus on the variant exclusives sold by Hot Topic, who offer an exclusive version of the ponies: Fluttershy, Spitfire, Lyra Heartstrings & (not a pony but part of the cartoon series) Discord. These ponies are clearly marked on the boxes they come in with the words "Hot Topic Exclusive" by their respective pictures.
The interesting thing about the My Little Pony Mystery Minis line is that they chose to make the, usually quite colorful bodies of the ponies, all black. These have earned the name silhouette, and are the only Mystery Minis line currently out that does not come as an exact miniature (and therefor colored) version of the fictional characters they represent. Why Funko chose to make the bodies of the ponies black instead of the colors they are actually portrayed as in the show is a mystery in itself. My guess is that they figured it would make the figurines stand out from the TONS of other pony figures and merchandise found out there. And after all, it was the silhouette variants that really caught my eye and drew me to this series - nicely done Funko! ;D
Now all that being said however, there are actually colored versions of the Mystery Minis Ponies available. A few of them are available in the standard series sold most places, such as a colored version of Princess Twilight Sparkle and Trixie.
There are a few more colored versions of the ponies available, however, they are considered chase figures and are therefor much more difficult to find. This is where the Hot Topic exclusives come in, and the reason I focus on those figures in my unboxing videos. As stated above, the series two Hot Topic exclusive ponies are: Fluttershy, Spitfire and Lyra Heartstrings and each of these cute little ponies come in their respective show accurate colors.
The My Little Pony Hot Topic exclusives Mystery Minis from series one include: Derpy, Pinkie Pie, Dr. Hooves, Rainbow Dash and DJ-Pon3 all in show accurate or colored versions.
Each series of Mystery Minis comes in a "standard" set which is not sold by Hot Topic and can be found in major retail stores. These do not include the Hot Topic exclusives, but do include a few ponies that were taken out to make room for the exclusive variants sold by Hot Topic. This is the case for almost all Mystery Minis lines that come with exclusive variants. For example, in My Little Pony series 1, the Glow In The Dark Derpy and DJ-Pon3 ponies found in the standard set are removed for the Hot Topic exclusive variants. Below is a picture comparison between the two set versions of series 1.
The standard set version of Mystery Minis can be purchased many places. Some of the more common, or larger retail chains they can be found in are: Target, Walmart, Walgreens, Barnes and Nobel, and Kmart among others. They can also be found in many comic and game shops. The prices seem to vary from about 6 to 10 dollars a box depending on the shop you pick them up at.
All Funko Mystery Minis come in blind boxes, which means you won't know which figure you've purchased until you open it! Hence the name: Mystery Minis. Blind box purchases have a hugely popular following! Many blind box/bling bag series will come with what is commonly called "chase" items. These items have a much lower chance rate of finding. For example, in the Hot Topic series two line of the My Little Pony Mystery Minis, the Hot Topic exclusive variants have a 1 in 72 chance of finding those figures, as opposed to 2 in every 18 figures such as the Applejack or Rarity ponies.
Because these chase figures are so difficult to find, it makes the chance of finding one incredibly fun and exciting for many. However, even without chase figures, it's just fun to purchase a small item that has a element of surprise to it - very much like a birthday or Christmas gift! Its a HUGE favorite of mine to see someone open a figure they weren't expecting to find and see the delight in their expressions - SO fun!!
For this reason and many others, I love blind boxes and blind bags, which definitely includes Funko Mystery Minis. In all, I would say Funko Mystery Minis are wonderful little collectable figurines that are made fairly well for the price of the figures, the fun in opening them, and the possibility of that rare chase figure!
